Deputy Fire Marshal (Matt Damon)
The Deputy Fire Marshal is responsible for enforcing Butte County Improvement Standards and California Fire Code on all use permits, minor use permits and commercial building permits countywide.  The Deputy Fire Marshal also enforces and inspects all California Code of Regulations Title 19 regulated occupancies in unincorporated Butte County .

Deputy Fire Marshal (Darren Read)
The Deputy Fire Marshal is responsible for enforcing Public Resources Code 4290, 4291 (SRA only), Butte County Improvement Standards, and the California Fire Code on all new building construction (commercial and residential) within Butte County.  

The Deputy Fire Marshal also enforce Public Resources Code 4290 (SRA only), Butte County Improvement Standards, and when applicable the California Fire Code on all lot line adjustments, grading permits, parcel splits, subdivisions, general plan amendments, administrative permits, and rezones within Butte County .

Fire Inspector ( Breck Wright or Shane Vargas )
The Fire Inspector is responsible for pre and final construction inspections on all new building construction within Butte County and underground LPG tank inspections.

Public Resources Code 4290
These regulations have been prepared and adopted for the purpose of establishing minimum wildfire protection standards in conjunction with building, construction and development in State Responsibility Areas (SRA).  These regulations shall become effective September 1, 1991. The future design and construction of structures, subdivisions and developments in State Responsibility Area (SRA) shall provide for basic emergency access and perimeter wildfire protection measures as specified in PRC 4290. These measures shall provide for emergency access; signing and building numbering; and vegetation modification. The fire protection standards contained within PRC 4290 shall specify the minimums for such measures.

Public Resources Code 4291
To ensure continued maintenance of properties in conformance with the defensible space requirements outlines in PRC 4290 and to assure continued availability, access, and utilization of the defensible space provided during a wildfire, provisions for annual maintenance shall be included in the development plans and/or shall be provided as a condition of the permit, parcel or map approval. PRC 4291 is the law requiring annual defensible space be provided around all structures in, upon, or adjoining any mountainous area, forest-covered lands, brush-covered lands, grass-covered lands, or any land that is covered with flammable material.

Butte County Improvement Standards
It is the purpose of the Improvement Standards to provide minimum standards to be applied to improvements and private works to be dedicated to the public and accepted by the County for maintenance or operation, as well as improvements to be installed within existing rights-of-way and easements. This is necessary in order to provide for coordinated development of required facilities to be used by and for the protection of the public.

State Responsibility Area
Pursuant to Public Resources Code (PRC) §4125-4128, the Board of Forestry and Fire Protection classifies all lands in the state for the purposes of determining areas in which the financial responsibility of preventing and suppressing wildfire is primarily the responsibility of the state. These lands are termed State Responsibility Area (SRA).

Fire Hazard Severity Zone
Fire Hazard Severity Zones are geographical areas designated pursuant to California Public Resources Codes Sections 4201 through 4204 and classified as Very High, High, or Moderate in State Responsibility Areas or as Local Agency Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zones designated pursuant to California Government Code Sections 51175 through 51189.

The California Code of Regulations, Title 14, section 1280 entitles the maps of these geographical areas as “Maps of the Fire Hazard Severity Zones in the State Responsibility Area of California.”
